What is the difference between a Paraphrase
and a Translation?
A Paraphrase is written to make the Bible
more easily understood. It focuses more on being easy to read. Paraphrases
are very good for daily reading and casual study.
A Translation is written very carefully
to translate as closely as possible the exact meaning of the original manuscripts
from their original languages. (Hebrew and Aramaic for the Old Testament,
and Greek for the New Testament.) The above mentioned Translations
are excellent, and are still very readable. Translations
are also Good for daily reading, and are highly recommended for serious
study. The most popular Translation is the
NIV Bible.
How do we know we can trust the Bible?
The Bible is one of the first places we look
to understand how much we can trust the Bible.
God takes the written word very seriously, just listen to the close of
the book of Revelation to understand how serious God is about this.
Rev 22:18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy
of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the
plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from
this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree
of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
It is clear that God is serious about protecting His written word from
unauthorized tampering. We also find in the Bible
itself testimony about it's origin and value.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is
God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.
The Bible is a collection of Books inspired
by God and authored by about 40 different author
79e
s, from kings to shepherds,
It was written over a period of about 4000 years with a 400 year gap between
the Old and New Testaments. The entire work has integrity and unity of
content and purpose. It does not contradict itself. It is truly ours, by
the inspiration of God, and the faithfulness of Men and Women who were
faithful to record what God was telling them to.
